I recently spent some time on the Isle of Skye with my wife, Satty.
These photos were taken at the beautiful Fairy Pools — a long way from Manchester and, more importantly, a long way from work.
And it got me thinking about a question I often ask business owners:
Could you leave your business for a week without worrying about what was happening while you were away?
For many business owners, the answer is no.
The phone still needs answering. Decisions still need making. Problems still need solving. Customers still want to speak to you.
Even when you’re technically on holiday, part of you is still at work.
When Your Business Depends Too Much on You
There’s a big difference between owning a business and having a business that completely depends on you.
If everything has to come through you, taking time away becomes difficult.
And that can also make it difficult to grow.
The answer isn’t necessarily to work harder or put in more hours.
It’s to build a better business.
That means having the right systems, processes and people in place. It means delegating effectively. It means knowing your numbers and having a clear plan for where the business is going.
Ultimately, it’s about creating a business that works for you, rather than one that constantly demands more from you.
